A Cognitive Processing Model for Assessing and Treating Domestic Violence and Stalking by Law Enforcement Officers

Therapists often use a generic solution to treat a multifaceted problem in cases of domestic violence and stalking by law enforcement officers. This paper presents a cognitive model of social information processing for the purpose of helping clinicians decipher the intrapersonal level of this problem. This paper also reviews the decoding, decision-making, and enactment phases of cognitive processing, taking into account risk factors affecting all areas of cognitive processing. The authors cover the police officer’s unique vulnerabilities in these areas and suggest therapeutic interventions.
